Over reactive Blue Heeler in car - 2009-08-02
Question
I have an 8mth x blue cattle dog (from the pound); she is very intelligent, obedient and active. My main problem is she goes ballistic when she travels in the car and I can\'t control her. She jumps around and especially reacts to cars travelling in the opposite direction. I have resorted to tying her down on the floor and putting sheets above her so she can\'t see things going past. Any other ideas?
Answer
Most dogs from the pound are there because they have issues. Your dog may well be over stimulated with things that move, eg cars, bikes etc. As this breed has a strong chase instinct and confinement of the car make this become over reactivity and energy that gets out of control. Reduction of visual stimuli is a good idea, but I would prefer you to start with more basics – eg take her to a roundabout and sit her and allow he to get used to things that move; once relaxed move to the next phase – have her in a stationary car and when that works well, move on to the next phase. Do not respond when she does things you do not want; praise when she is good. Treat her like a dog – and if persist seek professional help.
