Timid 6 y.o BC x Blue Heeler - 2009-09-08

Question

I have a 6yr old female border collie x blue heeler. Class 5 level & has been for 3 yrs. She is very timid and will not let strangers near her or other friendly dogs. I would like to get past this with her, but I cannot overcome her timidness. Have you any advice please. Thanks

Answer

Eye contact with a timid dog is enough to send it in a frenzy, tallness has the same, glasses, beards etc – all which is unfamiliar to her. I would have a little treat box with me all the time and ask people that want to help to throw a trail of little treats to her to make her come and explore or give her a treat whilst looking away and if needed make themselves small. There must be an event in her past that has really frightened her of people. It can be done will take a lot of time and patience and rewarding her for when she tries – don’t reward her timidness. If persists, I would seek help of a good behavioural trainer as this is stressful for both of you.
