Desexed German Shepherd - 2008-06-13
Question
My male GSD was desexed at age 3. The vet assured me he would stop mounting other dogs but be just as protective. Two years later the opposite is true, and he is a highly-strung dog afraid of strangers. This is a massive change in personality. How can I get my old dog back?
Answer
From my experience desexing helps suppress the natural dominance and sexual desires in a male, but it should not affect his personality at all. Mounting is often an expression of dominance, and does not just have a sexual explanation. Having desexed him @ 3 years means that the hormones were already flowing and it will take time to get it out of his system. I would recommend that you talk to your vet and also think of an event where the dog could have been frightened in the past, either by people or other creatures. Lack of socialisation could also play – but something must have happened. Dogs learn by association. If need be speak to a specialist, as this is not enjoyable for you or the dog.
