Digging Dog - 2008-06-13

Question

Hi my dog is digging my new lawn up he has no treats that I give that he can hide as they are given in the house and has numerous toys any advice he has come on a long way for a 10 month dog with no training so I am happy except this help would be appreciated

Answer

When preparing the lawn for the new grass you may well have used fertilisers and/or things that appeal to a young dog. Scent for a dog is a very important communication tool and where they can smell things, they may dig to find out what it is – rather normal dog behaviour. Suggest that you make your dog a digging pit – and give treats and toys ONLY in the pit – so the appealing part of the garden is only the pit. Ensure that you only use liquid fertiliser on gardens when having animals.
