My dog lacks confidence. I think it's because my ex boyfriend, who we lived with since she was a pup, was pretty aggressive. She's skittish & nervous. How can I get her to trust me again and raise her confidence?

You have analysed that very well, I think. And our immediate reaction is to soothe her & comfort her – but what this dog needs is strong leadership, knowing what the rules are and where she stands. Try and show leadership and confidence – as a dog is a great reader of your body language. She can feel when you are worried how she will behave, and she immediately reacts to become more fearful and protective. If you can take her out into the big world, and let her learn and socialise – so she feels less threatened. This takes time! If persists, get help from a professional dog trainer.
