Leash problems puppy - 2008-07-13
Question
We have a 14 week old lab cross cocker spanial. He doesn\'t mind a collar or leash and is well trained and behaves quite well but we can\'t get him to walk on a lead outside. He just doesn\'t like going anywhere. How do we get him to want to go for a run.
Answer
I would recommend you allowing the puppy to play in the garden or house with the leash on; call him and play with a ball or similar to get him to move with the leash dragging behind him as this is a rather typical sign of still being leash shy. In a few days pick up the leash and chase the ball with him on the leash. From there entice him to go out - and tap your leg excitedly when he lags - NEVER pull him as it only makes it worse. Often a favourite family member walking ahead will make a puppy follow - train with a slack leash at all times. Only use tiny, quick pulls with a verbal reprimand to stop him from pulling. Takes a few days to get this all working.
