Pulling Alaskan Malamute - 2008-12-11

Question

I am the proud beautiful 20 month old female Alaskan Malamute and my husband and i are having trouble with her pulling on the lead. I tried to teach her heel, and and we have tried a halter, but nothing seems to work. I rarely walk her cause she pulls too much and she even makes my husbands hands red and strains his arm. Plase help!

Answer

They can be strong dogs, especially if they are wilful and stubborn. The need strong leadership and I use head collars on the strongest of dogs and work them well. Suggest you use two leashes one on the neck collar and the other on the head collar and give you a chance to use it how it is meant to be used. If your brand is either a Gentle Leader and/or Black Dog Halter a lot has to do with the fitting as well. The Halti only comes in standard sizes and cannot be tailored, whereas the others you can tailor to the dogs face. If persists I would seek advice from a professional - either trainer and/or club.
