Adopted Cross Breed Recall Issues - 2009-05-30

Question

We adopted a crossbreed from a rescue association. she is a very sweet dog but is overly timid, afraid of loud noises and hates baths, though this is improving over time. Our biggest issue is recall, 90% of the time she comes but if slightly distracted she ignores us. She would be the perfect dog if she came every time we called her, how can we get her to come every time? Our concern is that it is a safety issue and we need to have control of her at dog parks, the beach etc. We have tried treats but she is not food motivated, her great love is playing with other dogs and this is when we have the least control over her. We would appreciate any ideas, tips you can offer to get her to come EVERY time we call her. thank you.

Answer

As you explained she seems sweet, timid and may never have been socialised properly – which is why she shies from noises etc. Persevere with introducing her to the world, slowly and gently – and without any molly coddling – she needs leadership she can trust. Be kind, yet firm, have transparent rules. Start recall in a secure environment, before expecting her to do it 100% when there are all sorts of interferences for her. If 100% proof around the house and in the house, start in a quiet are and build things up. It takes time and she needs to readjust to her new leader. If persists seek help.
