Fight between same sex dogs - 2009-07-07

Question

My Staffy cross (3) and foxy cross (4) have just had their first really serious barny. Both are bitches, with kind and loving natures. The foxy started it and lost. She has been top dog until now. How do I reintroduce them? They have been best mates until now. The Staffy is keen to make up and is crying for her friend. The foxy is freaked and growling. Bites are almost healed but she is still shocked and wary. I have bought a muzzle for the Staffy. It seems an awful solution, to a logical shift in dominance.

Answer

You have identified this very well – this is likely a leadership fight – and with the Staffy being bigger and stronger this was the likely outcome. This issue happens more with same sex dogs. But above all YOU should become the leader if you wish this to stop. A dog is a pack animal and when they know who their leader is, there are no fights, regardless of breeds etc. You can have a tizz, and a growl, but no real fights. If the Staffy has drawn blood, be careful as they are a powerful dog. I would reintroduce them on a walk, both in same direction, ideally with two handlers and bring them closer as you walk. Do this on neutral territory. And see how you go from there. A muzzle can reinforce negatives! Take the leadership issue seriously; don’t single either dog out, both a pat at same time etc. No molly codling with either and get professional help if needed.
